A new peer-reviewed study in Pediatrics warns that popular TikTok “Get Ready With Me” beauty routines are putting teens—some as young as 7—at serious risk of skin damage. Researchers posed as 13‑year‑olds and analyzed 100 trending TikTok videos, often featuring elaborate skincare regimens comprising an average of six products—and in some cases more than a dozen—per application.
The findings reveal that these routines typically include 11 potentially irritating active ingredients—like alpha‑hydroxy acids (AHAs) and salicylic acid—boosting the likelihood of irritation, allergic dermatitis, and heightened sun sensitivity. Alarmingly, only about one in four daytime routines included sunscreen. Teenagers are also spending an average of $168 monthly—some spending over $500—on these regimens.
Beyond physical damage, experts are raising concerns about psychological impacts. These videos often promote unrealistic beauty ideals—lighter, “glowy” skin—and fuel consumerism and self-consciousness among young viewers.
Dermatologists advocate for simplicity: a mild cleanser, fragrance‑free moisturizer, and daily SPF. They urge parents to monitor social media and discuss the risks of complex skincare trends with their children.
