A growing movement in the fashion world is giving traditional Indian textiles a modern makeover.
Designers are using Banarasi brocade to create structured blazers and power suits—fusing regal silk textures with contemporary tailoring. Equally popular are Ikat co‑ord sets from Andhra and Odisha, making waves in street-style and resort wear globally. Meanwhile, Chikankari embroidery, long associated with Lucknow’s heritage garments, is finding new life in minimalist shirts, crop tops, and formal modern wear.
Other notable trends include fashionably sustainable khadi, now transforming into draped dresses, blazers, and high‑end menswear; Kalamkari denim jackets and jeans, where folk-art motifs tell intricate stories on modern silhouettes; and Bandhani—the tie‑dye textile—reanimated in breezy dresses and skirts ideal for vacation wardrobes.
Designers are also experimenting with Kanjeevaram-inspired gowns and corsets, merging the weighty woven tradition into hybrid couture forms. Finally, Patola prints—known for their geometric precision from Gujarat—are making their mark on trench coats, jumpsuits, and Western-style garments.
