Dermatologists are cautioning against the overuse of potent skincare actives—such as retinol, tretinoin, exfoliating acids, and antioxidants—which, when applied incorrectly or in excess, can actually hasten skin aging rather than prevent it.
According to Dr Shareefa Chause of Mumbai’s Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, layering multiple active ingredients in pursuit of the “10‑step routine” trend can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier. This misuse may trigger chronic inflammation, redness, micro‑tears, excessive dryness, and lowered moisture retention, all contributing to premature aging.
Although many active compounds—particularly retinoids and exfoliating acids—are clinically proven to improve skin texture and tone, experts emphasize that improper application or combining them incorrectly can strip the skin’s natural oils. Over time, this can weaken its defensive functions, leading to increased sensitivity, wrinkles, and long‑term damage.
Amid social media and influencer‑driven beauty cultures, Dr Chause advises favoring simplicity over complexity in skincare. Instead of blindly following viral routines, consumers should prioritize consistency and compatibility of products—and consult dermatologists to tailor regimens suited to their skin type.
