Luxury fashion label Prada is once again under fire in India after launching its antiqued leather pumps, which many netizens say bear a striking resemblance to traditional Indian juttis. The flap, stitching, and pointed toe silhouette of the pumps have drawn comparisons to Rajasthani mojaris and Punjabi juttis, triggering a fresh wave of social media outrage.
This backlash follows a recent controversy where Prada faced accusations of cultural appropriation for its Kolhapuri-inspired sandals, prompting the brand to officially acknowledge the design influence and promise collaboration with Indian artisans.
Amritsar shopkeepers and artisans expressed disappointment, stressing the economic importance of the jutti craft and urging legal and cultural safeguards. Footwear designer Rashmi Tomar echoed this sentiment, calling the pumps inspired - but not credited - and emphasising the need for ethical design practices.
Critics argue that haute fashion from luxury houses should not repurpose indigenous designs without giving due credit - or equitable collaboration - to the artisans whose heritage they draw upon.
