Marriage in India has always been seen as a lifelong bond - “the same dal chawal for life,” as Bollywood puts it. But for Indians in their 30s, the definition of marriage is changing fast.
Traditionally, arranged marriages offered stability, family approval, and commitment. Today, however, many financially independent, urban Indians are questioning if monogamy should be an obligation or a choice. Surveys reveal that 35% of Indians are already in open relationships, while 41% say they would agree if their partner suggested it.
Interestingly, curiosity about open marriages isn’t limited to metro cities. Data shows smaller towns like Kanchipuram are leading in exploring non-traditional relationships. Experts say this shift is driven by exposure to global cultures, financial freedom, and a desire for authenticity in relationships.
Still, the idea is not mainstream. Relationship counsellors warn that open marriages demand trust, transparency, and emotional maturity, and often clash with India’s cultural values of family honour and stability.
For many, monogamy remains the comfort zone, but for some, marriage is evolving into a balance between tradition and personal freedom.
Is this a passing trend or the future of Indian relationships? The conversations have begun.
