On October 20, 2025, Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a significant outage originating from its US-East-1 data center in Northern Virginia. The disruption, attributed to a bug in AWS's automated DNS management system used by DynamoDB, created an empty DNS record that failed to self-repair, necessitating manual intervention.
The outage affected over 2,000 services globally, including major platforms such as Snapchat, Signal, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Canva, Roblox, Duolingo, Fortnite, Coinbase, and Epic Games. Users reported widespread issues, with Downdetector logging millions of outage reports.
Amazon has since disabled the affected automation tools and is implementing safeguards to prevent future occurrences. The incident underscores the internet's reliance on a few major cloud providers, raising concerns about resilience and the risks of centralizing critical infrastructure.
