On July 24, 2025, 21-year-old Mohammad Parvez, a tribal youth from the Gujjar community in Satwari area, Jammu, was shot dead during a police pursuit of suspected drug peddlers. Police claimed the youth was killed in a crossfire, alleging he belonged to the narcotics network. Parvez’s family vehemently denied these allegations, demanding justice and calling him innocent.
In response to widespread protests and pressure from community leaders, the Jammu & Kashmir government swiftly suspended two police officers involved in the operation and ordered a magisterial inquiry. The District Magistrate appointed a Sub‑Divisional Magistrate to lead the investigation, which is to be completed within two weeks. An FIR under Sections 109(1), 3(5) of the BNS and Section 3/27 of the Arms Act has also been lodged at Satwari Police Station.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the incident as “highly unfortunate and deeply regrettable,” calling it indicative of past mistakes that Jammu & Kashmir paid a heavy price for. He has demanded a time-bound and transparent probe. Political leaders including Mehbooba Mufti and Mian Altaf Ahmad have echoed these calls, insisting on an impartial investigation amid claims of a fake encounter.
This incident marks the fifth tribal death in 2025 under contested circumstances in J&K, raising wider concerns over policing methods and accountability in the region.
