On July 26, 2025, a woman in Navi Mumbai nearly lost her life after blindly following Google Maps directions. She intended to cross the Bay Bridge in Belapur en route to Ulwe. Instead, Maps directed her beneath the bridge toward Dhruvatara Jetty. Unaware, she continued driving and plunged into a water-filled creek under the jetty.
Marine Security Force personnel present nearby immediately sprang into action. Spotting the car partially submerged and the driver floating in the water, they rescued her within minutes. Thankfully, she emerged uninjured. A crane was later deployed to recover the white hatchback from the creek. Video footage capturing the dramatic rescue has circulated widely.
This incident is the latest in a growing trend of navigation errors leading to accidents, including fatal cases across India. Last year, a similar misdirection in Uttar Pradesh caused a car to fall off a damaged bridge into a river. Google had expressed condolences and said it was assisting investigations.
Safety experts are warning users to cross-check digital directions, especially in areas with infrastructure gaps or at night, noting that GPS tools remain helpful but imperfect.
