The Election Commission of India has officially announced that the Vice‑Presidential election will be held on September 9, 2025, following the mid‑term resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21/22, citing health reasons . Dhankhar is the first vice‑president in India's history to resign before completing his five‑year term .
As mandated by Article 63(2) of the Constitution, the poll is being conducted “as soon as possible” after the vacancy arose . The EC has already finalized the electoral college list, comprising elected and nominated members of both Houses of Parliament . A notification is expected on August 7, followed by the last date for nominations on August 21 and withdrawal deadline of August 25 . Polling and counting will both take place on September 9.
The newly elected Vice‑President will assume office for a full five‑year term from the date of appointment . Given Dhankhar’s early exit, the election marks a critical constitutional process to ensure continuity in the second-highest office of the Republic.
