Who will fill India's empty VP Chair? Election date revealed.

The Election Commission of India has officially announced that the Vice‑Presidential election will be held on September 9, 2025, following the mid‑term resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21/22, citing health reasons . Dhankhar is the first vice‑president in India's history to resign before completing his five‑year term .

As mandated by Article 63(2) of the Constitution, the poll is being conducted “as soon as possible” after the vacancy arose . The EC has already finalized the electoral college list, comprising elected and nominated members of both Houses of Parliament . A notification is expected on August 7, followed by the last date for nominations on August 21 and withdrawal deadline of August 25. Polling and counting will both take place on September 9.

The newly elected Vice‑President will assume office for a full five‑year term from the date of appointment . Given Dhankhar’s early exit, the election marks a critical constitutional process to ensure continuity in the second-highest office of the Republic.
