On July 27, 2025, North Korea marked the 72nd anniversary of the Korean War armistice signed on July 27, 1953, declaring that the fight ended in a stalemate despite its use of the term “Victory Day.” During the commemorations, leader Kim Jong Un visited the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum and the Tower of Friendship memorial, paying homage to Chinese troops who fought alongside North Korea.
Addressing assembled soldiers, Kim reaffirmed his vision of building "a rich country with a strong army" and claimed the nation would emerge victorious in the “anti‑imperialist, anti‑U.S. showdown.” He emphasized that this ambition reflects North Korea’s strategic ideology centered on Juche self-reliance and revolutionary military doctrine.
North Korea is also expanding alliance with Russia: thousands of North Korean troops have been deployed to the Kursk region, supplying munitions in the war in Ukraine, with further deployments expected in July or August, according to South Korean sources.
While North Korea observes the armistice anniversary as a moment of triumph and defiance, South Korea does not hold major events on this date. The stark contrast underscores heightened regional tensions and North Korea’s continued militaristic messaging.
