Donald Trump has declared that Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old right-wing activist and long-time political ally, will be posthumously honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom the United States’ highest civilian award. Kirk was fatally shot in the neck while speaking at a student event organised by his advocacy group, Turning Point USA, at Utah Valley University. After the shooting, he was taken to Timpanogos Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In making the announcement at the Pentagon, Trump described Kirk as “a giant of his generation,” saying his voice and courage inspired millions, especially young people. The Federal Bureau of Investigation disclosed that its agents have obtained images of the suspected assassin and recovered the high-powered rifle used in the attack. Trump also expressed sympathy to Kirk’s family, offering condolences, and emphasised that Kirk understood and connected with the youth of America.
