Why do we ring bells in temples?

In Hindu temples, ringing the bell before entering is more than a ritual - it’s a sacred symbol of connection. A powerful Sanskrit shloka explains: “I ring this bell to invite the deities and to ward off the demons.”

Bells are considered extremely auspicious. Mythologically, it is believed that the sound of a temple bell erases sins from a hundred lives. Its resonance is said to replicate the sound of “OM” - the original vibration of the universe.

Spiritually, the bell symbolizes divine presence. Its body represents infinity (God), the tongue represents Goddess Saraswati, and the handle embodies life energy. These bells are crafted from five elements - copper, silver, gold, zinc, and iron - representing the five cosmic elements (Pancha Mahabhoota).

There are various types of bells. Garuda bells are sacred and associated with Lord Vishnu. Handbells, used during aartis, invite divinity and purify surroundings.

Scientifically too, the bell’s sound activates brain chakras, improves focus, dispels negativity, and draws attention inward - turning the mind toward peace and spirituality.
