In a historic all-Indian final at the FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, 19‑year-old Divya Deshmukh defeated veteran Koneru Humpy in rapid tie-breaks to win the championship and earn the coveted Grandmaster title, making her India’s fourth female GM. After two closely contested classical games that ended in draws, Divya claimed victory in the second rapid tiebreak -nplaying with Black - to clinch the title by a 1.5–0.5 margin.
This triumph comes just 13 months after she secured the World Junior Girls’ title. Already a key contributor to India’s gold medal in the 2024 Chess Olympiad, Divya’s rapid rise underscores her growing influence in world chess.
With her emergence, India now proudly counts four women Grandmasters - Koneru Humpy, R Vaishali, Harika Dronavalli, and now Divya—and has reaffirmed its dominant position in women’s chess.
