Bhopal's newly built Aishbagh railway overbridge, costing ₹18 crore and measuring 648 m long and 8.5 m wide, has sparked an uproar ,thanks to a jaw-dropping almost 90° turn halfway through. Designed to alleviate long wait times at the railway crossing and serve around 300,000 commuters daily, the structure was deemed necessary due to land constraints and the nearby metro station, according to the PWD chief engineer.
Residents, traffic experts, and social media users are warning this design - dubbed by critics as a "disaster waiting to happen"- poses crash risks, especially for drivers misjudging the turn. One X user quipped it's an "engineering marvel" but "accident zone" , and political leaders have vowed investigations .
In response, PWD Minister Rakesh Singh confirmed that NHAI has inspected the bridge and its report - due Friday - will guide any necessary safety upgrades. With hype and skepticism rife before the inauguration, all eyes are on whether safety plans - like speed controls, banked curves, signage, and vehicle restrictions - will turn this controversial design into a viable urban asset.
