Following India’s resilient draw against England in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered a pointed response to the controversial “handshake” gesture from England captain Ben Stokes. With about 15 overs remaining on Day 5, Stokes offered a handshake to suggest a draw while Ravindra Jadeja (on 89) and Washington Sundar (on 80) were close to centuries - an offer India declined.
Gambhir defended the decision at his post‑match press conference, arguing: “If someone is batting on 90 and the other on 85, don’t they deserve a hundred? Would England have walked off if their own players were in that position?” He asserted that the pair had earned their milestones.
On-field, Jadeja and Sundar stayed on to notch centuries, helping India survive a tough chase and secure a draw. Gambhir’s comments underline his belief in competitive spirit and individual recognition - even amid strategic matchplay.
