IIM‑Calcutta has decided to allow second-year MBA student Paramanand Mahaveer Toppannawar—granted interim bail on July 19, one week after his arrest on July 12 following an FIR lodged on July 11—to rejoin academic sessions starting July 28, provided he submits his bail order to the institute.
The academic council, chaired by acting director Saibal Chattopadhyay, also approved access to campus facilities like the library. However, they denied his request to return to the co‑ed hostel, citing safety concerns expressed by female residents and the fact that his hostel room remains sealed by police as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to institute officials, there are no legal grounds to bar his return to classes, although compensatory attendance for the period he missed (July 12–22) will be discussed later. Meanwhile, Kolkata Police has confirmed that the investigation continues, noting procedural gaps such as delayed survivor testimony and incomplete medico‑legal examination.
