For the fifth consecutive day, deadly border violence between Cambodia and Thailand has persisted, claiming at least 35 lives and displacing over 260,000 people across both sides. Responding to escalating armed conflict, Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia and Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai of Thailand convened urgent ceasefire talks in Kuala Lumpur on July 28, 2025. The summit is hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in his capacity as the ASEAN chair, with U.S. and Chinese representatives attending as observers.
The clashes began after a landmine explosion injured Thai soldiers and quickly escalated into cross-border shelling, airstrikes, artillery fire, and heavy weapon use - fueled by a long-standing territorial dispute over historical religious sites like Ta Moan Thom and Preah Vihear.
Thailand has shut its Cambodian border crossings (except for returning migrant workers), recalled its ambassador, and accused Cambodia of insincerity. Cambodia, meanwhile, has rejected accusations of targeting civilians and reiterated calls for international mediation.
No formal ceasefire agreement has yet been reached. However, both parties agreed to continue negotiation and avoid further escalation amid rising humanitarian concerns.
