India holds 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (as of 2024), featuring a rich blend of cultural, natural, and mixed treasures ranking sixth globally in site count. Among the 34 cultural sites are the iconic Taj Mahal, Ajanta & Ellora Caves, Khajuraho Monuments, Sun Temple at Konark, and the planned marvel of Jaipur City.
Natural marvels include Kaziranga, Sundarbans, the Western Ghats, and the towering Great Himalayan National Park testaments to India’s ecological diversity. The mixed site, Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim, uniquely combines spiritual reverence and natural splendor.
Recent additions underscore India’s expanding heritage landscape: Santiniketan and the Hoysalas temples were inscribed in 2023, while the Maratha Military Landscapes fort ensemble spanning Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu earned its place on the list in 2025. These sites, beyond their grandeur, safeguard biodiversity, cultural memory, and the spirit of innovation across centuries.
