Supreme Court hits pause on High Court's big 7/11 decision!

The Supreme Court of India, on July 24, 2025, issued a stay on the Bombay High Court’s July 21 order acquitting all 12 individuals convicted in connection with the July 11, 2006 terrorist bombings on Mumbai’s suburban railway network . These coordinated blasts, which detonated seven pressure-cooker bombs in eleven minutes, tragically claimed over 180 lives and injured hundreds.

A bench of Justices M. M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh stayed the acquittal judgment and issued notices to the former convicts, though clarified that they will not be re-arrested for now . The court emphasized that the High Court’s decision will not set a legal precedent, allowing a full review of Maharashtra's appeal.

The Maharashtra government had challenged the acquittal, contending that the High Court dismissed critical evidence - including RDX recovery - on technical grounds and erred in doubting the prosecution’s case. With the apex court now examining the state’s appeal, the fate of the accused remains uncertain as justice for the 2006 tragedy hangs in the balance.
