A searing heatwave continues to heat up northern India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing red and orange alerts across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Maximum temperatures are currently hovering between 44 °C and 48 °C, with “feels‑like” temperatures in Delhi reaching up to 50 °C.
Health experts stress that even those indoors must remain vigilant. To counteract heat-related illnesses, individuals are advised to:
-
Hydrate continuously, sipping on water, coconut water, buttermilk, ORS, nimbu-paani, and chaas for electrolyte balance; avoid sugary, caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.
-
Adopt a cooling diet, favoring fresh fruits, yogurt, and light home-cooked meals rich in water content.
-
Dress in loose, light-colored cotton or mulmul/khadi fabrics, and use hats or sunglasses when stepping out.
-
Cool the body with cold showers, wet towels, or damping pulse points.
-
Restrict outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm; if necessary, use high-SPF sunscreen.
Medical authorities remind that heatstroke and dehydration can afflict anyone—particularly the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and those with health conditions. The IMD forecasts a slight cooling trend from June 14, possibly bringing thunderstorms, but until then, these precautions are critical.
