India's active Covid cases near 6,500 with ‘new XFG variant’

India is grappling with a Covid-19 resurgence, with 6,491 active cases reported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on June 9, 2025. Kerala leads with 1,957 cases, followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Haryana. The XFG variant, a highly transmissible Omicron subvariant, is driving part of the surge, with 163 cases detected across states, including 89 in Maharashtra, 16 in Tamil Nadu, 15 in Kerala, and 11 in Gujarat, per INSACOG data. The variant, first identified in Canada, exhibits strong immune evasion, raising concerns about its spread, according to The Lancet.

Despite the rise, no deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, though 65 deaths have occurred since January 2025 across multiple states. Health authorities urge vigilance, mask wearing, and testing to curb the spread of this evolving virus.
