The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released a medical update on vice-captain Rishabh Pant, confirming he has sustained a fractured right toe during Day 1 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. Pant will no longer perform wicket-keeping duties but remains available to bat if the team requires, according to the BCCI statement.
Pant retired hurt on 37 after a freak injury while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, with the ball smashing into his boot. He was immediately taken off the field on an ambulance buggy, as cameras captured visible bleeding and swelling. Initial scans have confirmed a metatarsal fracture, and experts have advised a minimum of six weeks’ rest .
Dhruv Jurel will take over the gloves for the remainder of the Test. The Indian management is reportedly considering using a pain‑killer plan to bring Pant back to bat on Day 2, but clinical concerns remain given his difficulty walking .
Pant’s participation is now gameplay-dependent, and his availability will be monitored throughout the Test series.
