Kathmandu witnessed violent protests as Nepal’s Gen Z — youth under 26 — took to streets against a government-imposed social media ban. The unrest erupted after authorities blocked 26 platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube, citing misuse for fake accounts, hate speech, fraud, and spreading fake news.
Thousands of students and young professionals, many in school and college uniforms, marched toward the parliament waving national flags and slogans like “Shut down corruption, not social media” and “Youths against corruption.”
The situation escalated when protesters tried to breach parliament gates, vandalized property, and clashed with police. Authorities deployed the army and imposed curfew in New Baneshwor and other affected areas. Police used tear gas, rubber bullets, batons, and water cannons to disperse crowds.
Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli called an emergency cabinet meeting amid rising criticism and calls for his resignation. Critics argue the ban risks curbing free expression, while the government insists stricter control is needed to prevent fraud, misinformation, and maintain law and order.
The protests highlight the growing global tension between social media regulation and youth activism, as Nepal joins countries tightening oversight on online platforms.
