At the 2025 FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, India secured an historic achievement as Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh advanced to the final. Humpy earned her place by defeating China’s Lei Tingjie in a tense semi‑final marathon that lasted eight games, finishing with a 5–3 scoreline. Meanwhile, 19‑year‑old Divya stunned former world champion Tan Zhongyi in her semi‑final clash, booking her spot in the final and becoming the first Indian woman ever to reach this stage.
This all‑Indian final guarantees India a first‑ever Women’s World Cup winner. Both players also secure places in next year’s Women’s Candidates Tournament, as the top three finishers qualify. Humpy, a veteran Grandmaster and two‑time World Rapid Champion, continues to break new ground, while Divya, the rising star from Nagpur, reinforces the arrival of a new generation in Indian chess.
The final showdown between experience and youth highlights the strength of Indian talent. Regardless of the outcome, the result marks a breakthrough moment in India’s rise in women’s international chess.
