In a gesture of goodwill, Bangladesh’s interim government has announced the export of 1,200 tonnes of hilsa fish to India ahead of Durga Puja. The consignment, expected to reach West Bengal soon, is being seen as a mark of “enduring friendship” between the two neighbours.
Hilsa, popularly called ilish, is an integral part of festive celebrations across eastern Indian states like West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura. Bangladesh has fixed the price at around ₹1,100 per kg, far cheaper than the current Indian market rates, where hilsa often sells at much higher prices.
Interestingly, this year’s consignment is lower than previous ones. In 2024, Bangladesh sent 3,000 tonnes, and a similar amount was maintained during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. Diplomatic sources revealed that plans to send extra supplies to Assam and Tripura did not materialise due to limited response from local importers.
The announcement also coincides with a crucial Joint River Commission meeting on river water sharing, adding political weight to the move. For now, fish lovers in Bengal can look forward to a festive treat, though in smaller portions.
