Lost Flavours of India: 8 Traditional Dishes We’ve Forgotten!

India’s food legacy goes beyond butter chicken and biryani. There are numerous traditional dishes that once graced our kitchens but are now nearly forgotten. These age-old recipes represent regional pride, cultural memory, and generations of taste.

Take Murgh Cholay for example-a dhaba-style gem from undivided Punjab that survived Partition, combining chicken and chickpeas. Then there’s Dal ki Dulhan from Bihar and UP, with wheat dumplings simmered in arhar dal. Kesari Maas of Maharashtra is a royal mutton dish laced with saffron. Awan Bangwi, a Tripuri rice cake, uses rare ‘Guria’ rice wrapped in ‘Lairu’ leaves.

From the Gujarati dessert Kuvar Pak made with aloe vera, to Rampuri Taar Korma, a gelatin-rich mutton gravy from Rampur-each dish is a flavor-packed memory. Bajre ke Chamchamiya, a savory winter pancake, and Bedu Roti from Uttarakhand with urad dal filling, round off this deliciously nostalgic list.

Reviving these recipes isn’t just about food-it’s about preserving heritage on a plate.
