In a significant wildlife crime bust, Goa Police seized 5.75 kg of ambergris, colloquially known as whale vomit, from a vehicle intercepted in Sanguem village on June 6. Valued at around ₹10 crore, this rare substance is a coveted fixative in high-end perfumery, earning it the moniker "floating gold".
Acting on a tip‑off, authorities nabbed three suspects - two Goan residents and one from Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district - while they transported the contraband from coastal areas into Goa's interiors . The arrest has triggered a deeper investigation aimed at exposing the full smuggling supply chain, including potential international links and poaching syndicates.
Ambergris, secreted by sperm whales and protected under India's Wildlife Protection Act, is strictly banned from trade. Its high value has spurred illegal harvesting and trafficking, posing serious threats to marine conservation .
Officials are now focusing on tracing the origin of the seized ambergris and identifying any bigger network behind the deal. The case underscores the increasing risk posed by wildlife trafficking - and the urgent need for stronger enforcement at sea and land.
