Power boost for Bihar as Centre approves First SMR-based plant

The central government has approved Bihar's request for its first nuclear power plant, making it among six states to receive atomic facilities under India's new Nuclear Energy Mission announced in Union Budget 2025-26.

Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced the Small Modular Reactor (SMR)-based plant on Tuesday, emphasizing the Centre's full support for the project. SMRs represent newer nuclear technology that's more flexible, cost-effective, and safer than traditional large-scale reactors.

The announcement comes as a significant boost for Bihar, which has historically faced power deficits and infrastructure challenges. The plant will provide stable electricity supply and support the state's industrial ambitions.

Additionally, the Centre approved a 1,000 MW battery storage project with ₹18 lakh per MW viability gap funding. Bihar will also receive an additional 500 MW electricity supply for six months to meet peak summer demand, recognizing the state's recent power sector reforms including eight million smart meter installations.
