India is set to host the prestigious FIDE Chess World Cup after a gap of 23 years, as announced by the International Chess Federation. The event will take place from October 30 to November 27, 2025, featuring 206 international players in a knockout format.
Each round will consist of two games, and players will get 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and 30 minutes for the rest, with a 30-second increment per move. The top 50 players get a bye in the first round, while others compete in the standard top-vs-bottom format.
Importantly, the top 3 finishers in this tournament will directly qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, a key step towards the World Championship title.
India, a growing chess powerhouse, last hosted the World Cup in 2002. In recent years, it has hosted several major events like the FIDE Chess Olympiad 2022 and Tata Steel Chess India. The host city for the 2025 World Cup is yet to be announced.
FIDE's CEO Emil Sutovsky stated that the chess culture in India makes it the perfect host for such a mega event.
