On June 10, 2025, an Indore court granted the Meghalaya Police seven-day transit remand for Raj Kushwaha (21), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Akash Rajput (19) - three suspects recently arrested in connection with the murder of newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya . Hailing from Madhya Pradesh and employed in Indore and nearby districts, they are alleged to have been hired by Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, to carry out the killing .
This development follows earlier remands: a fourth suspect, Anand Kurmi (23), was sent to Meghalaya transit custody until June 16 after being arrested in Sagar district. Meanwhile, Sonam, aged 24 and the central figure in the case, was remanded for three days, to be further questioned alongside the three men .
Investigators allege a calculated murder plot: the three men are accused of executing two sharp-force head blows on Raja and abandoning his body near Weisawdong Falls near Cherrapunji . Police are working through CCTV footage and mobile phone data that suggest Raj Kushwaha coordinated logistics from Indore while Chauhan, Rajput, and Kurmi traveled to Meghalaya to carry out the crime.
Families of the accused, particularly Raj Kushwaha’s, have vehemently claimed innocence. His mother stated: "He is being falsely accused. He is innocent."
Meanwhile, Meghalaya's Tourism and Home Minister Paul Lyngdoh reassured the public that the state remains safe and noted that legal action is being taken against anyone trying to malign Meghalaya’s image over this isolated incident .
With transit remands now in place, all suspects will be transported to Shillong for extended interrogation and forensic inquiry, as authorities piece together the timeline from the couple’s disappearance on May 23 to the body’s discovery on June 2.
