In response to the shocking gang-rape of a student on its premises in June, South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata has announced significant upgrades to campus security. During the governing body meeting on July 26, officials decided to deploy ex-Army veterans in place of private guards to ensure robust safety measures for students.
This step comes after the arrest of Monojit Mishra - a former student and temporary staff member - and two current students and one security guard in connection with the crime. As part of tightened security protocols, the college will also install more CCTV cameras and strengthen its Internal Complaints Committee.
The incident triggered widespread outrage and drew scrutiny from universities and courts. Parents and students had boycotted classes on the first day of LLM sessions, expressing fear over inadequate safety provisions. The University of Calcutta has launched a probe into suspected admission irregularities linked to the accused and is considering a broader overhaul of its exam and intake systems across affiliated law colleges.
In another follow-up, the Higher Education Department of West Bengal has ordered disciplinary action—expelling Monojit Mishra and rustication of two others - and flagged 17 students for possible involvement in the incident.
