India's fertility rate has dropped to 1.9, below the replacement level of 2.1 needed for population stability, according to the UNFPA. Experts say poor lifestyle choices are a major contributor to this decline.
Doctors recommend the following six lifestyle changes to improve reproductive health:
-
Eat a nutritious diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, selenium, and B-vitamins to support hormonal balance and ovulation.
-
Maintain a healthy weight, as obesity can lead to conditions like diabetes and hormonal issues that impact fertility.
-
Exercise regularly—aerobics, strength training, or yoga - to boost metabolism and regulate hormones, especially useful for managing PCOS in women.
-
Avoid smoking and alcohol, as they damage sperm and egg DNA and reduce hormone levels.
-
Manage stress, which can disrupt hormonal functions and reduce fertility.
-
Get quality sleep and avoid exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastics, cosmetics, and pollution.
Early awareness and proactive changes are key to reversing the declining fertility trend.
