Why did Air India go dark? The somber reason behind the blacked-out social handles.

Following the harrowing crash of Flight AI171 in Ahmedabad on June 12, Air India has taken its social media accounts - including X, Facebook, and Instagram - dark, replacing its iconic red-and-white logo with a black icon as an expression of mourning . This visual blackout extends to the airline's homepage, transformed into a monochrome design that features a prominent emergency helpline number (1800‑5691‑444) for families seeking information about loved ones.

Industry experts note that such a gesture is standard practice in the aviation sector - an understated, respectful acknowledgment of tragedy, signaling deep solidarity with victims and their families. Air India's Chairman N. Chandrasekaran emphasized that this symbolic move is part of the airline’s earnest efforts to provide emotional support and accurate updates during ongoing rescue and recovery operations.

As investigators and rescue teams continue their work in Ahmedabad, Air India’s blacked-out presence across platforms stresses a commitment to dignity and respect in a moment of national mourning.
