The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) after recent appearances showed notable swelling in his lower legs. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that following a comprehensive examination - including vascular tests and Doppler ultrasounds - there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis, arterial disease, heart failure, or other systemic conditions.
CVI is a relatively common and benign age-related condition, especially in those over 70. It occurs when damaged veins struggle to return blood efficiently to the heart, leading to swelling, aching, or varicose veins. Medical experts noted while CVI can cause discomfort, it is treatable through methods such as leg elevation, compression stockings, and mild procedures if required.
In addition, Leavitt explained that bruising observed on Trump’s hand was due to frequent hand‑shaking combined with his daily aspirin regimen, which thins the blood and can cause minor bruises.
The White House emphasized that Trump “remains in excellent health,” and all test results from his April physical were within normal limits.
