A massive cloudburst struck Dharali near Harsil in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand on August 5, 2025, causing flash floods and landslides that have washed away entire sections of the village and left at least four people dead, with many more reported missing .
Union Home Minister Amit Shah immediately contacted Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to offer full central assistance, ensuring rapid deployment of rescue teams including ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, and the Army . Multiple teams - such as a 16-member ITBP team and three NDRF squads—are already on the ground, with more on standby .
CM Dhami confirmed relief efforts are underway "on a war footing," with all agencies working to evacuate residents and search for the missing amidst rising water levels in the Kheer Ganga river. Local police have issued alerts urging residents, children, and livestock to stay safe from volatile riverbanks .
This incident highlights the extreme vulnerability of Himalayan valleys during monsoons, underscoring the urgent need for robust early warning systems and disaster preparedness.
