Raksha Bandhan, traditionally observed on the full moon day of Shravana (usually August), celebrates the bond of protection between brothers and sisters. Its name literally means “bond of protection”—a sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, praying for his well‑being and long life, while he pledges to protect her and often gives a gift in return.

The festival has its roots in several ancient legends, each reinforcing the spirit of love and duty. One famous myth from the Mahabharata tells how Draupadi tore a piece of her sari to bind Krishna’s injured finger, prompting his vow to protect her forever. Other stories include Goddess Lakshmi tying a rakhi to King Bali, Yama’s sister Yamuna granting him immortality, and Indra being protected by Sachi with a sacred thread before battle.

Historically, the festival symbolized diplomatic and social alliances too - like Rani Karnavati sending a rakhi to Emperor Humayun for protection, or Alexander’s wife sending one to King Porus, which led Porus to spare Alexander’s life in battle .

Modern celebrations have evolved beautifully: rakhis are now tied between sisters and brothers, cousins, friends, and even soldiers—extending the bond of protection and mutual respect beyond blood ties. The ritual still holds its emotional essence - love, commitment, and a reminder of the values of protection and unity.
