In India’s small towns and rural belts, a quiet educational revolution is underway-thanks to 10-minute screen-recorded tutorials by EduPyramids, a startup incubated at IIT Bombay. These short, self-paced videos are available in 22 Indian languages, designed to run even on 2G networks and low-cost ₹10,000 laptops. Over 10 million learners across 8,000 colleges have already benefited.
Founded by Professor Kannan M. Moudgalya, the initiative builds on the Spoken Tutorial project that started over a decade ago. The tutorials became a lifeline during the COVID-19 pandemic, continuing even in low-bandwidth areas like Jammu and Kashmir.
From ASHA workers improving infant nutrition to students like Nikita Mhatre landing tech jobs, the impact is tangible. The IEEE P2955 standard globally validated this model in 2024 as a benchmark in scalable education.
Professor Moudgalya’s own inspiring journey-from walking barefoot in Tamil Nadu to studying at IIT Madras and Rice University-drives his mission: to democratize quality education for every student, everywhere.
With plans to support India’s future training missions, EduPyramids is determined to ensure that rural learners have access to IIT-level education-affordable, accessible, and empowering.
