A staggering one in five Indians suffers from Vitamin D deficiency, despite the nation’s abundant sunshine, recent studies reveal. This "silent epidemic" affects all demographics, with women and urban residents particularly vulnerable due to indoor lifestyles, pollution, and cultural habits that limit sun exposure.
Vitamin D is critical not only for bone health and muscle strength but also for immune defense, mental well‑being, and calcium absorption. Deficiency can trigger rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults, as well as fatigue, joint pain, and increased risk of infections.
Experts recommend simple daily strategies to boost levels naturally. These include 15–30 minutes of morning sun exposure (between 7–10 AM) to allow skin to synthesize Vitamin D, while balancing sunscreen use. Dietary sources—such as fatty fish, egg yolks, fortified dairy or plant milks, and sun-exposed mushrooms—also contribute. Engaging in outdoor activities like walking or gardening further enhances natural intake.
Experts also urge scaling up affordable testing and supplementation programs. While supplements are regulated under the National List of Essential Medicines, high testing costs and limited fortification efforts remain hurdles. Authorities stress need for public awareness campaigns, expanded fortification of staples, and subsidized healthcare services to ensure broader Vitamin D sufficiency across India.
