Glycerin has quietly cemented its status as a skincare staple since the late 18th century, evolving from a hygiene additive into a core ingredient in cleansers, mists, serums and moisturizers. Its enduring appeal lies in its simple chemistry: a colourless, odourless, syrupy liquid derived from plant or animal fats that excels at moisture retention.
Dermatologists laud glycerin as one of the most effective humectants available. By binding water molecules—either from the environment or deeper skin layers—to the surface, it helps maintain hydration, plumpness and smoothness. “Glycerin pulls water towards it, holding it within the skin barrier and preventing it from escaping,” explains Dr. Sophie Momen of The Cadogan Clinic.
Key benefits include deep hydration, improved elasticity, smoother texture and accelerated healing of dry patches. Glycerin also plays well with other actives such as niacinamide, peptides and hyaluronic acid, making it a versatile corrective agent for dry, sensitive or compromised skin.
Ideal for dry and sensitive skin types, glycerin-based products range from gentle cleansers and toners to intensive masks and makeup formulations. Non-comedogenic by nature, it’s generally safe for acne-prone skin, though experts advise using it judiciously to avoid greasiness and potential breakouts.
