The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a surprising yet important guideline for the monsoon season, defrost and clean your refrigerator every two weeks. According to health experts, the high humidity levels during monsoon create the perfect environment for bacterial and fungal growth inside fridges.
Spills, moisture, and leftover food particles can quickly become breeding grounds for harmful microbes, leading to food contamination and illness. Dr. Narendra Singhla, Internal Medicine Consultant at CK Birla Hospital, warns that neglecting fridge hygiene can cause food poisoning, infections, and digestive problems.
Regular cleaning not only ensures food safety but also improves cooling efficiency. Defrosting helps prevent frost build-up that can hinder your fridge’s performance. As food spoils faster in this weather, FSSAI’s warning is a timely reminder to prioritize cleanliness and prevent health hazards.
