During his visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the country's first female Prime Minister, as “Bihar ki Beti” (Daughter of Bihar), acknowledging her ancestral roots in India.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar made history by becoming the first woman to hold the Prime Minister’s office in Trinidad and Tobago from 2010 to 2015. Born in 1952, she studied law and worked as an attorney before entering politics. She is currently the leader of the United National Congress (UNC) and has also served as Attorney General and Minister of Education.
Her ancestors reportedly migrated from Bihar, India to the Caribbean as indentured laborers in the 19th century. Modi’s gesture celebrates this deep cultural and historical connection between India and its global diaspora.
This moment was widely appreciated as it recognizes the impact of the Indian diaspora and strengthens ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago.
