Thailand’s military accused Cambodia of breaching an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire, agreed during Monday’s Malaysia‑facilitated talks under ASEAN and U.S. pressure. According to Major General Winthai Suvaree, Cambodian forces launched armed attacks into various Thai border zones shortly after the ceasefire took effect at midnight, prompting Thailand to respond in self-defence.
Cambodia’s defence ministry vehemently denied these claims. Spokesperson Maly Socheata stated there had been no clashes since the ceasefire began and affirmed a commitment to uphold peace across all front lines.
Despite the dispute, Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai downplayed fears of renewed hostilities, saying that following a discussion with Cambodian defence officials, the border remained calm and there was no escalation.
Under the ceasefire agreement brokered by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, which also had backing from U.S. President Trump, both sides scheduled military commander meetings on July 29 and a broader General Border Committee session on August 4 to reinforce the truce and discuss next steps.
