A Russian national, who had overstayed her expired business visa, was found living in a cave atop Ramachandra Tirtha hill near Gokarna, Karnataka. She was accompanied by her two young daughters, aged around 2 and 4 years, surviving in makeshift conditions. Local forest department officials and police were alerted by concerned villagers and successfully rescued the family.
Upon questioning, the woman explained that she had fled urban areas due to difficulties in renewing her visa and found refuge in the remote location. She had no immediate shelter or support, struggling to provide basic needs for her children. The authorities provided immediate aid, helping the family with food, shelter, and legal assistance. They were then taken to a government facility where the woman is undergoing immigration processing, and her visa extension options are being explored.
This incident highlighted gaps in the system for tracking foreign nationals and raised concerns about vulnerable individuals slipping through the cracks. Authorities are reviewing procedures to better identify and assist foreigners facing hardship. Meanwhile, the woman's case has prompted NGOs to call for stronger support mechanisms for foreigners in distress.
