A massive 8.8‑magnitude earthquake rocked off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, 2025, triggering widespread tsunami alerts across the Pacific, including Alaska, Hawaii, and the U.S. West Coast, as per Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and seismic monitoring agencies. Initial waves, measuring under four meters (~13 ft), struck the Kuril Islands and reached Hokkaido with smaller heights (~0.6 m).
Hawaii has observed waves around 4–5 ft (1.2–1.5 m) in areas like Hilo and Maui, with evacuation orders issued for coastal zones including Honolulu. Authorities warn larger waves - up to 10 ft - may hit in the coming hours, posing flooding threats along vulnerable shores.
In Alaska, first tsunami waves have made landfall, though no major damage reported yet. The National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) continues monitoring for additional wave activity and advises coastal communities to stay alert and ready to evacuate if necessary.
Emergency agencies across affected regions have activated precautionary measures, urging residents to move to higher ground and avoid beaches during the unfolding tsunami threat.
