After Aadhaar and UPI revolutionised digital services in India, the Centre is now working on giving every address a unique digital identity. The proposed system, called Digipin (Digital Postal Index Number), aims to link each address with a 10-character alphanumeric code based on map coordinates. This would improve accuracy in deliveries, public services, and governance, especially in rural or remote areas.
Currently, India lacks proper address regulations, leading to delays and data misuse. With rising e-commerce and delivery services, a standardised digital address system is more crucial than ever. The government is preparing a draft framework under the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) mission, focusing on user consent and secure data sharing.
A special law and regulatory authority may be introduced soon, making address data as central to daily life as Aadhaar. Public feedback will be sought before the final rollout, expected by year-end.
