The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) - a UN-backed authority on hunger crises - has issued a dire alert, stating that a worst-case famine scenario is presently unfolding in Gaza. With conflict and mass displacement intensifying, access to food, clean water, and healthcare services has plunged to historic lows across most of the Strip.
According to IPC data up to July 25, the famine thresholds for food consumption have been exceeded in most areas, and acute malnutrition has surpassed critical levels in Gaza City, particularly among young children. Shockingly, nearly 39% of the population is going days without eating, and nearly 500,000 people - around 22% - are facing catastrophic hunger (IPC Phase 5).
Aid access remains severely constrained despite Israel’s recent announcements, with humanitarian deliveries reaching only about 50% of requested volumes, and distribution sites overcrowded by desperate civilians.
UN agencies - including WHO and WFP - and NGOs urgently call for an immediate ceasefire and unfettered humanitarian access to prevent a massive surge in famine-related deaths and irreversible child malnutrition.
