Leaked private images and videos, especially shared without consent, are becoming an alarming threat, especially to women. A recent case at Madras High Court brought attention to a woman whose private videos-secretly recorded years ago-resurfaced online, causing immense emotional trauma.
But here’s what most victims don’t know: You have legal rights and options.
According to Indian cyber laws and IT rules, anyone who uploads or circulates private content without permission can face criminal charges. Victims can file complaints with the Cyber Crime Portal (cybercrime.gov.in), local police stations, or use online reporting systems on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh emphasized that privacy is not a privilege-it's a right. He reminded courts to act with empathy and urgency in such cases.
