A confidential document from Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has surfaced, revealing a stark contrast between Moscow's public alliance with Beijing and its internal security assessments. While President Vladimir Putin has publicly lauded the "unshakable" friendship with China, the FSB internally categorizes China as "the enemy," citing significant espionage threats to Russian national security.
The leaked eight-page memo, reportedly drafted in late 2023 or early 2024, outlines China's covert activities targeting Russian military operations in Ukraine, Arctic research, and scientific advancements. It also highlights China's efforts to recruit Russian scientists and acquire sensitive military technologies. The FSB's counterintelligence initiative, named "Entente-4," was approved just days before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, ironically referencing the growing Moscow-Beijing partnership.
This revelation underscores a deep-seated mistrust within Russia's security apparatus regarding China's intentions, despite the outwardly strong diplomatic ties. The leak not only exposes internal contradictions but also raises questions about the future trajectory of Sino-Russian relations and the authenticity of their strategic cooperation.
