On May 31, the Indian government is conducting a nationwide civil defence exercise - Operation Shield - across states and UTs bordering Pakistan, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, J&K, and Chandigarh.
The drill aims to enhance readiness against potential hostile attacks, including drone threats. Activities include controlled blackouts, air raid siren tests, emergency services mock drills, and evacuation rehearsals.
In Amritsar, a blackout will occur from 8:00–8:30 PM (excluding key areas like the Golden Temple).
Haryana will see a 15-minute blackout in vital zones, with over 32,000 civil defence volunteers participating.
In J&K, citizens are asked to switch off all lights after the siren at 8 PM. These drills are vital in strengthening India's internal security apparatus amidst growing geopolitical tensions.
