With Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Argentina, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reminded Indians of the long-standing bonds between the two nations. In a social media post on July 5, he dubbed Modi a "Super Premium Frequent Flier" as he wraps up the third leg of his global tour. Ramesh pointed out that while most Indians associate Argentina with football icons Maradona and Messi, there are deeper historical and cultural links too.
He recalled that Rabindranath Tagore spent time in Buenos Aires in November 1924, invited by writer Victoria Ocampo, and highlighted Indira Gandhi’s 1968 visit, during which she honored Ocampo with an honorary doctorate from Visva-Bharati University . Ramesh also noted ties through economist Raul Prebisch, founder of UNCTAD, where Dr. Manmohan Singh once served, and the term “Global South” that emerged from early UNCTAD discussions .
By comparing Modi's journey with these earlier diplomatic milestones, Ramesh underscored the durability of India–Argentina relations - beyond just the excitement of the present visit - and the need to recognize historical continuity in bilateral outreach.
